Getting Help With: Out of hours & Emergencies

If you wish to contact a doctor outside of surgery hours please ring the GP Out of Hours service directly on 111. Calls to 111 from mobiles and landlines are free. Lines are open 24/7 every day.

Local pharmacies

Your local pharmacist will be able to give you clinical advice and treatment for a range of minor ailments. You do not need an appointment, and if your condition is more serious, the pharmacist will direct you to the right route of care. Click here to find your nearest pharmacy.

Weekend and evening appointments

Northumbria Primary Care offers an out-of-hours service for our patients. This service is available 6.30pm – 8.00pm on weekdays and 9.00am – 5.00pm on Saturdays. The service rotates around different Northumbria Primary Care surgeries, so please confirm the location of your appointment with the reception team when you speak to them.

If you are calling to book an appointment with the enhanced access service or have an enquiry about this service, please call the practice on the usual phone number during our regular hours. If your call is urgent please call 111, or 999 in an emergency.

Life-threatening emergencies

In a life-threatening emergency dial 999. This could be sudden severe chest pain, loss of consciousness, loss of power in a limb or severe bleeding.

When to call 999:

  • Major accident or trauma
  • Severe breathlessness
  • Severe bleeding
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Severe chest pain

Minor injuries

If you have an injury which might need stitching/glue or involves a broken bone, you should attend the local minor injuries unit at Wansbeck General Hospital or North Tyneside General Hospital.

When to call 111:

  • You think you need to go to A&E but it’s not a critical emergency
  • Your GP surgery is closed and you need healthcare advice
  • You don’t know who to call for medical help
